Substitute gods

Has a nation changed its gods, even though they are no gods? But my people have changed their glory for that which does not profit.

We can have a substitute for almost everything today. We are rich enough to replace a light bulb, even before it is broken. But how did we ever get to the point, where we looked for a substitute for God?
